Why is Friday different in Makkah and Madinah?
Friday prayer in Makkah and Madinah draws the largest weekly crowds to the two Holy Mosques. Jumu'ah takes the place of the midday Dhuhr prayer, with a sermon before it, and many people who pray elsewhere during the week come to Al-Masjid al-Haram or Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Friday is also part of the Saudi weekend, which adds to the traffic.
For transport, the result is simple: roads near both mosques can close well before the prayer, cars use drop points further out, and everyone leaves at once afterwards. The authorities decide closures on the day, depending on the crowds, so nobody can give you a fixed time. Plan to arrive early and to be picked up well after the prayer.
How does Friday affect travel through the day?
Every Friday follows the same pattern, though Fridays in Ramadan are busier still; our Ramadan transport guide covers that month.
| Part of the day | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Crowds start building toward the mosques | Do check-outs, airport runs and errands early |
| Before the prayer | Roads near the mosques can close well before Jumu'ah | Leave early and expect to walk from a drop point |
| During the prayer | The mosques, plazas and nearby streets fill | Cars cannot move near the mosques; do not book pickups for this time |
| After the prayer | Crowds leave at once and roads reopen gradually | Book pickups for well after the prayer, at a point away from the mosque |
| Evening | Thursday and Friday evenings are busy on the Jeddah to Makkah road | Allow extra time for airport runs and intercity trips |
Getting to Jumu'ah at Al-Masjid al-Haram
- Leave early. The mosque and its plazas fill well before the prayer, and when they are full, people pray in the courtyards and streets around them.
- If your hotel is within walking distance, walk; on a Friday it is usually quicker than any car.
- From Kudai or Aziziyah, take the hotel shuttle or a taxi early, and expect to walk from a drop point.
- Agree the drop point with the driver before you set off, and the pickup point for later.
- Carry water, your phone and a small prayer mat; outside areas can be hot in the midday sun.
- Note the gate number you enter by, and agree a meeting point with your group.
Getting to Jumu'ah at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi
In Madinah, vehicle access around the mosque is controlled all week, and on Friday the central area is at its busiest. If you stay in the central area, walk. If you stay further out, the driver drops you as close as access allows and you walk on, so leave earlier than on other days.
The plazas around the mosque fill early, and many people pray outside in the shade of the large umbrellas. Women's prayer areas have their own entrances, so families should agree a meeting gate before they split up. Our getting around Madinah guide covers the central area in more detail.
Planning pickups after the prayer
After Jumu'ah, everyone leaves at once, and the roads near the mosques take time to clear. Do not book a pickup for the moment the prayer ends. Book it for well after, or walk back to your hotel first and be collected there.
If you need a car sooner, walk away from the mosque to an open road, then share your live location with the driver on WhatsApp. An hourly driver can wait away from the central area and come to you when you message; it costs from SAR 80 per hour with a 3-hour minimum.
Airport runs, check-outs and long trips on a Friday
- Book hotel check-out pickups in the morning, well before the prayer crowds build, or later in the afternoon.
- For a Friday flight from Jeddah, the drive from Makkah is 102 km, about 1 h 25 min in normal traffic; add time for closed roads near the Haram when you leave.
- Makkah to Madinah takes about 4 h 30 min, so on a Friday leave in the morning or well after the prayer.
- If you want to pray Jumu'ah at one of the Holy Mosques before a long trip, start the journey only after the crowds have cleared.
Elderly pilgrims, wheelchair users and children
Friday crowds are hardest on elderly pilgrims, wheelchair users and young children. Leave earlier than you would on other days, and plan for the walk from the drop point as well as the drive. A wheelchair-accessible van with a ramp drops as close to an accessible gate as the open roads allow.
Put a card with a phone number and the hotel name in each child's pocket, and agree a meeting point in case anyone is separated. If a long wait in the heat is too much, consider praying in the part of the mosque nearest your hotel and leaving after the main crowd.
Friday checklist
- Friday rides booked the day before, with drop and pickup points agreed.
- Pickup times set for well after the prayer, not straight after it.
- Check-outs and airport runs moved away from midday where possible.
- Phones charged and the driver's WhatsApp number saved on each phone.
- Water, sun protection and a small prayer mat.
- A meeting point agreed with family, including a gate number.
