Makkah hotel areas explained: Ajyad, Ibrahim Al Khalil and Aziziyah

Makkah hotel areas range from the Clock Tower, Jabal Omar and Ajyad, a short walk from the Haram, to Kudai about 2 km south and Aziziyah several kilometres east toward Mina. A taxi between them is a short city ride from SAR 60 per car, but central roads close around prayer times, so drop-off points change.

How do Makkah hotel areas differ?

Makkah hotel areas trade walking distance against car access. Hotels next to the Haram save you a long walk five times a day, but the roads around them close or slow at prayer times. Hotels further out have easier car access and drop-off at the door, but you need a shuttle or taxi to reach the Haram.

This guide sets out each area with the vehicle-access notes our drivers follow, so you can choose a hotel and plan arrivals, check-outs and Haram trips.

Clock Tower and Jabal Omar: closest to the Haram

The Abraj Al Bait hotels sit directly opposite the Haram's southern plaza and share a vehicle drop-off zone at the complex. At peak prayer times the roads closest to the Haram close, and the driver uses the nearest open drop point and helps with luggage.

Jabal Omar hotels are a short walk west of the Haram and have their own vehicle access from the western side. Drop-offs are quickest outside Friday and peak prayer times. Hotels just west of the Haram, such as the Sheraton Makkah Jabal Al Kaaba, are reached through the Jabal Al Kaaba and Umm Al Qura road area, where traffic slows around prayers.

Ajyad and Ibrahim Al Khalil Road

Ajyad hotels sit a short walk south and east of the Haram, on the Al Safa side. Central roads here can close around prayer times, so leave extra time for check-out pickups and agree the pickup point with your driver the night before.

Ibrahim Al Khalil Road is the main approach from the south. Hotels along it are a walk of several minutes from the Haram, and drivers drop at the hotel entrance when the road is open to traffic.

Kudai and Aziziyah: further out, easier by car

Kudai is about 2 km south of the Haram, linked by hotel shuttle buses. Because it is outside the central area, traffic is lighter and drop-off is at the door.

Al Aziziyah and nearby districts lie several kilometres east of the Haram, toward Mina. They are popular for longer stays and during Hajj, and most guests use hotel shuttles or a taxi to the Haram.

Shuttles run on a timetable and fill up before prayers. A taxi leaves when you are ready, which helps with elderly family members, and short city rides start from SAR 60 per car. Our hotel shuttle and taxi comparison sets out both.

Which area suits your group?

  • Elderly or less mobile pilgrims: the Clock Tower, Jabal Omar or Ajyad keep the walk short. A wheelchair-accessible van can drop at accessible gates.
  • Families who want easy car access: Kudai or Aziziyah, with a taxi or shuttle to the Haram.
  • Ramadan and the last ten nights: a hotel within walking distance, since roads close across the central area from the evening.
  • Hajj: Aziziyah is popular, being close to Mina.
  • Long stays with shopping and luggage runs: Kudai or Aziziyah, where drop-off is at the door.

Drop-off and pickup tips

  • Send the exact hotel name; some hotels have similar names, such as Swissôtel Makkah and Swissôtel Al Maqam.
  • Near prayer times in the central area, expect the nearest open drop point rather than the door.
  • Book check-out pickups away from prayer times, and leave extra time on Fridays.
  • Night runs to the Haram for Tahajjud or Fajr run around the clock; a 20% surcharge applies between 00:00 and 05:00.
  • For moves between hotels, book a Makkah hotel transfer; the driver loads and unloads your luggage.
