When is Ramadan 2027 and how busy is Makkah?
Good Ramadan Makkah transport comes down to three things: booking early, leaving early and agreeing a realistic drop point. Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin around early February 2027, subject to moon sighting. Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each year, so confirm the start date nearer the time.
Ramadan is the busiest Umrah period of the year. Crowds build after Iftar and for Taraweeh at the Haram, and they peak in the last ten nights, when many pilgrims seek Laylat al-Qadr. Plans that work on an ordinary evening often fail in those nights.
Why can't the taxi drop you at the Haram gate?
Roads around the Haram close before Taraweeh, and in the last ten nights the closures spread across the central area from the evening. When a road is closed, the driver uses the nearest open drop point and you walk the rest. Closures follow crowd levels and the authorities' instructions on the day, so nobody can promise a fixed time or a drop at a particular gate.
Where you stay changes the picture. Clock Tower (Abraj Al Bait) hotels share a vehicle drop-off zone at the complex, and Jabal Omar hotels have vehicle access from the western side, but both are affected at peak prayer times. Hotels in Kudai, about 2 km south, have lighter traffic and door drop-offs, while Aziziyah, several kilometres east toward Mina, relies on hotel shuttles or taxis.
How to time your ride to Taraweeh
- Book a fixed pickup time in advance; for the last ten nights, book every Haram run at least 24 hours ahead.
- Leave well before Isha. Roads are at their busiest from Iftar onwards.
- Agree the drop point with the driver before you set off.
- Agree a return pickup point a short walk from the Haram, away from the closed roads, rather than at the gate.
- Save the driver's WhatsApp number and share your live location when you come out.
- If you are with elderly family, plan for the walk from the drop point as well as the drive.
Tahajjud and Fajr: night rides to the Haram
Our night taxi in Makkah runs 24/7 through Ramadan, including Tahajjud and Fajr runs to the Haram. Rides between 00:00 and 05:00 carry a 20% night surcharge, which is added to the fixed fare and shown before you book, so there is no surprise in the car.
In the last ten nights the Haram is very crowded for night prayers, and the walk from the drop point can be long. Leave earlier than you think you need to, and book your return for after Fajr, once you know which side you will come out.
Walking, hotel shuttle or taxi?
Our hotel shuttle vs taxi comparison goes into more detail on each option.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Walking | Hotels in the Clock Tower, Jabal Omar and Ajyad areas | Long walks back through crowds |
| Hotel shuttle | Kudai and Aziziyah hotels; free or cheap | Runs on a timetable and fills up before prayers |
| Pre-booked taxi | Elderly family, fixed times, several people | Drop at the nearest open point, not the gate |
| Hourly driver | Several trips in one day or evening | 3-hour minimum, from SAR 80 per hour |
Elderly and wheelchair users in Ramadan
Ramadan crowds are hardest on elderly pilgrims and wheelchair users. Our wheelchair-accessible vans have a rear ramp and tie-downs, so the passenger rides seated in their own chair, with room for up to four companions. The driver takes you as close to an accessible gate as the open roads allow.
Female-driver vehicles are available in Makkah for women who prefer one; book 12 hours ahead. Child seats are available on request. Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents has more practical tips.
Booking airport and Madinah transfers for Ramadan
Airport and Makkah to Madinah transfers sell out in Ramadan, so book as soon as your flights are fixed. Jeddah Airport to a Makkah hotel takes about 1 h 25 min and costs from SAR 180 per car, or SAR 330 in a family van. Makkah to Madinah is 450 km, about 4 h 30 min, from SAR 770.
Umrah needs a permit in the Nusuk app, and a visit to the Rawdah in Madinah needs its own booking. Book both early and confirm the current rules in Nusuk. Airport demand also peaks in the days after Eid al-Fitr, so book your departure transfer early too.
Ramadan transport checklist
- Umrah permit booked in Nusuk.
- Airport pickup booked with your flight number.
- Taraweeh and Tahajjud rides booked with fixed times.
- Drop and pickup points agreed with the driver.
- Return to the airport booked, including after Eid if you stay that long.
- Driver's WhatsApp number saved on every phone in the group.
