Why transport matters most on Umrah with elderly parents
Umrah with elderly parents is mostly about managing distance and effort. The rites themselves involve a lot of walking, so every step you save on transfers leaves more energy for Tawaf and Sa'i. Door-to-door transport, the right vehicle and sensible timing make the biggest difference.
Start by being honest about what each parent can do. Can they walk 200 metres? Climb into a high seat? Sit for four hours? The answers decide which vehicle you book and how you plan each day.
Which vehicle suits your parents?
Wheelchair-accessible vans are driven by drivers trained in assisting elderly pilgrims. Tell us whether the wheelchair folds and roughly how big it is, so we keep space for it.
| Mobility | Vehicle | Why it helps | Jeddah Airport to Makkah |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uses a wheelchair and cannot easily move to a car seat | Wheelchair-accessible van | Rear ramp and tie-downs; rides seated in own chair; up to 4 companions | SAR 360 |
| Walks short distances, uses a folding wheelchair | Comfort MPV | Sliding doors; room for a folded chair and 5 suitcases | SAR 260 |
| Large family with grandparents | Family van | High roof and easy entry; up to 11 passengers | SAR 330 |
| Wants a smooth ride on long trips | SUV | Captain seats; up to 7 passengers | SAR 360 |
| One parent and one companion, light luggage | Standard sedan | More legroom than economy; 3 suitcases | SAR 210 |
Arriving at the airport with elderly parents
- Request wheelchair assistance from your airline when you book your flights. Airline staff help inside the airport; our driver meets you at the arrivals exit.
- We track the flight and the driver waits free for 60 minutes after landing, which helps if airline wheelchair assistance takes extra time.
- Add our meet-and-greet service: a representative meets you, helps with luggage trolleys and walks you to the car.
- Keep medicines, prescriptions and a change of clothes in hand luggage, not in the hold.
Getting to the Haram and back
Roads closest to Masjid al-Haram close at peak prayer times. When they do, the driver uses the nearest open drop point, which can mean a longer walk. With elderly parents, travel to the Haram well before the prayer rather than at the last minute, and plan the return for after the crowds have thinned.
Our wheelchair-accessible vans drop off at accessible gates where access allows. Inside the mosque, wheelchairs and electric carts are available for Tawaf and Sa'i. Arrangements change, so ask the mosque staff about the current options when you arrive.
Hotel location matters as much as the vehicle. A hotel within walking distance, such as those in the Abraj Al Bait or Jabal Omar areas, cuts daily travel. If you stay further out, in Kudai or Al Aziziyah, a taxi is easier for elderly parents than a crowded hotel shuttle before prayers. Our Makkah hotel areas guide compares the districts.
Long journeys: Makkah to Madinah with elderly parents
The Makkah to Madinah drive is 450 km and takes about 4 h 30 min. Ask the driver to stop whenever someone needs a washroom, a short walk or a prayer; rest and prayer stops are included. Leave after Fajr or breakfast to travel in the cooler part of the day, and keep water and medicines within reach. A family van costs SAR 1,440 and a wheelchair-accessible van SAR 1,580 for this route.
The Haramain train is faster between stations, but stations involve walking, lifts and luggage handling, plus a taxi at each end. Our comparison of taxi and train from Makkah to Madinah sets out the trade-offs.
In Madinah: Rawdah, Ziyarat and short trips
Central Madinah has controlled vehicle access around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi. Drivers drop at your hotel's assigned entrance and help with luggage. A visit to the Rawdah is booked through the Nusuk app; check the current rules there before you plan the day.
A Ziyarat morning by car suits elderly travellers, because most stops are a short walk from the car and Masjid al-Qiblatayn has parking close to the entrance. If a parent uses a wheelchair, book a wheelchair-accessible van by the hour, from SAR 170 per hour. We also offer wheelchair transport for elderly visitors to Jannat al-Baqi.
