What Umrah transport does a family need?
Good Umrah transport planning starts with a list of every journey your family will make. Most trips follow the same pattern, though the order changes if you fly into Madinah first.
Our Umrah transport package covers three to five of these legs in one booking.
- Jeddah Airport to your Makkah hotel: 102 km, about 1 h 25 min.
- Makkah Ziyarat (optional): Jabal al-Nour, Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat in about 3 to 4 hours.
- Masjid Aisha at Al-Tan'eem (optional), if anyone wants to enter Ihram for another Umrah.
- Makkah to Madinah: 450 km, about 4 h 30 min.
- Madinah Ziyarat (optional): Uhud, Qiblatayn and Quba in one morning.
- Madinah hotel to Madinah Airport, or back to Jeddah Airport for your flight home.
What information should you have ready before booking?
- Flight numbers, dates and the terminal shown on each ticket.
- The number of adults, children and elderly travellers.
- Each child's age, so we bring the right child seats.
- How many suitcases and bags you have, including Zamzam and pushchairs.
- Hotel names and addresses in Makkah and Madinah.
- Whether anyone uses a wheelchair, and whether it folds.
- The language you would like your driver to speak.
- Whether you would like a female driver.
- How you plan to pay: cash, card, bank transfer or the STC Bank app.
Which vehicle fits your family?
Count suitcases as well as people. A family of four with six large cases will not fit in a sedan, however small the children are.
If you are six people, compare one family van with two sedans before you book.
| Group | Vehicle | Suitcases | Jeddah Airport to Makkah |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 people | Economy sedan | 2 | SAR 180 |
| 1 to 3 people, more bags | Standard sedan | 3 | SAR 210 |
| 4 to 6 people | Comfort MPV | 5 | SAR 260 |
| 4 to 7 people | SUV | 6 | SAR 360 |
| 7 to 11 people | Family van | 10 | SAR 330 |
| 12 people or more | Group bus | 40 or more | SAR 670 |
Travelling with children: car seats and pushchairs
Child seats are available on request. Tell us each child's age when you book so the driver brings the right seat, and say if you need more than one.
Pushchairs fold into the boot but take the space of a suitcase, so count them in your bag total. On long trips such as Makkah to Madinah, the driver stops for washrooms, meals and prayers when you ask, which helps with young children.
Travelling with elderly parents or a wheelchair user
For a parent who uses a wheelchair full time, book a wheelchair-accessible van. It has a rear ramp and tie-downs, so they stay seated in their own chair, with room for up to four companions.
For parents who can walk short distances, a comfort MPV with sliding doors is easier to get in and out of than a sedan. Ask for meet-and-greet at the airport, where a representative helps with trolleys and walks you to the car. Our guide to Umrah with elderly parents has more detail.
How do prayer times and traffic affect your plans?
Roads closest to Masjid al-Haram close at peak prayer times. When that happens, the driver uses the nearest open drop point and helps with luggage, but you may have a short walk. If you can, avoid booking hotel check-outs and arrivals just before a prayer.
On the Jeddah to Makkah road, Thursday and Friday evenings are the busiest and can add 20 to 30 minutes. With young children a daytime arrival is often easier than one in the small hours, and taxis carry a 20% night surcharge between 00:00 and 05:00.
Which rules and permits should you check?
- Umrah permits are booked through the Nusuk app. Check the current rules on Nusuk or the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah website before you fly.
- A visit to the Rawdah in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi is also booked through Nusuk.
- Only Muslims may enter Makkah.
- During Hajj season, checkpoints on the roads into Makkah check entry permits.
- Keep passports with you, not in the boot, on intercity trips.
- Check your airline's rules on Zamzam and baggage before the flight home.
