Getting around Madinah: taxis, buses and walking to the mosque

Getting around Madinah is mostly on foot near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, with a taxi, hotel shuttle or bus for Quba, Uhud and other sites a few kilometres out. City taxi rides start from SAR 60 per car, and Madinah Airport is 18 km from the mosque, about 25 min by road.

How do you get around Madinah?

Getting around Madinah is simpler than in most cities. The hotels in the central area surround Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, so most pilgrims who stay there walk to every prayer. The main Ziyarat sites, Masjid Quba, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and Mount Uhud, are only 4 to 5 km from the mosque, and a short taxi ride reaches each of them.

Vehicle access around the mosque is controlled, so cars drop at each hotel's assigned entrance rather than at the mosque gates. If you stay outside the central area, you need a taxi, hotel shuttle or bus for each visit to the mosque. Our Madinah hotel areas guide explains drop-offs by area; this guide covers moving around once you have arrived.

Walking to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi

The mosque is surrounded by wide plazas, shaded during the day by large umbrellas. The gates are numbered, so note the number of the gate nearest your hotel and use it as your meeting point with family. Women's prayer areas have their own entrances; follow the signs or ask the staff at the gates.

Several places are within walking distance. Jannat al-Baqi, the historic cemetery, is right beside the mosque, and Masjid al-Ghamamah is about 1 km away. The Hejaz Railway Museum, in the restored Ottoman-era station at the end of the old line from Damascus, is about 2 km from the centre.

Quba: walk or ride?

Masjid Quba is about 4 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, and a walkway links the two for those who want to walk. In summer, go early in the morning or after sunset, carry water and allow for the walk back. Elderly visitors and families with small children usually find a taxi easier.

The Prophet ﷺ used to visit Quba every Saturday, so expect more visitors on Saturday mornings. A taxi from the central area costs from SAR 60 per car each way, and Masjid al-Jumu'ah, about 3 km from the mosque, is a short stop on the way back.

Buses and hotel shuttles

Madinah has public bus services, and some Ziyarat tours run by group bus. Routes, fares and timetables change, so check the current official information, or ask your hotel which services stop nearby.

Some hotels outside the central area run shuttles to the mosque. Each hotel sets its own times and pickup points, and buses fill up before the main prayers, so ask at reception and leave early. For the busiest prayers, a pre-booked taxi gives you a fixed pickup time.

Prayer times, Fridays and Rawdah slots

Traffic near the central area is heaviest just before and after each prayer, and on Fridays the crowds for Jumu'ah are much larger. Book rides away from prayer times, and for Fridays read our Friday prayer travel guide.

If you hold a Rawdah slot in Nusuk, plan Ziyarat and shopping around it rather than the other way round. The Rawdah booking is separate from the Umrah permit, and the times are set in the app; our Rawdah guide explains the booking.

Leaving Madinah: Makkah, Badr and AlUla

Madinah to Makkah is 450 km, about 4 h 30 min hotel to hotel, from SAR 770 per car, and the driver stops at Dhul Hulayfah for Ihram on request. The Haramain train is the other option, with a taxi needed at each end. Badr is 150 km away and AlUla 350 km, both popular trips by road.
