How do people get around Riyadh?
Getting around Riyadh means covering long distances. The capital is large and spread out, built around wide roads and highways, and most journeys are made by car. Public transport has grown quickly: the Riyadh Metro opened to the public in stages from December 2024, and the city also has a public bus network.
For visitors, the right choice depends on the trip. The metro suits a journey along one of its lines with light bags. A taxi or app suits a single trip door to door. A driver by the hour suits a day of meetings or sightseeing with several stops.

The Riyadh Metro and city buses
The Riyadh Metro has six colour-coded lines, and one of them serves King Khalid International Airport. Check stations, opening hours and fares in the official Riyadh Metro and Darb app or on the official website, since details can change.
Most trips still need a walk or a short ride at one end. Before you rely on the metro, check how far your hotel or office is from the nearest station and whether you need to change lines. Our Riyadh Metro guide covers this in more detail.

Business districts and traffic
Most business trips go to Olaya and the Kingdom Centre area, King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), the Diplomatic Quarter and Riyadh Front. They are spread across the city, so a day with meetings in two or three of them is easier with one driver who waits than with separate rides.
Traffic is heaviest at the morning and evening rush hours, and King Fahd Road is busy at peak times. From October to March, Riyadh Season events add heavy evening traffic around Boulevard City and other zones. Book returns from events in advance; our Riyadh Season transport guide has more tips.
Airport and train stations
King Khalid International Airport (RUH) is 35 km north of the centre, about 40 min by road, and a taxi to central Riyadh costs from SAR 60 per car. The airport has several terminals, so tell your driver your airline; our post on Riyadh airport terminals explains which is which.
Riyadh has two railway stations for the SAR network, in different parts of the city: Riyadh North Station for the North Line to Qassim, Ha'il and Al Jouf, and the East Line station for Hofuf and Dammam. Check which one your ticket shows before you book the taxi.
