Madinah hotel to airport: how early to leave

The drive from a central Madinah hotel to Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Airport is 18 km, about 25 min, but your leaving time depends on your airline's check-in cut-off, so check it on your booking. Work back from that deadline: add the drive, a buffer for prayer-time traffic and time to check out, and book a fixed-fare taxi from SAR 60 per car.

How long is the drive from Madinah hotels to the airport?

Getting your Madinah airport time right starts with the drive. Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) is about 18 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, a drive of about 25 min. It has a single terminal for international and domestic flights, so there is no terminal to choose.

The drive is the easy part. What takes longer is getting from your room to the car with your bags, and the traffic near the Prophet's Mosque at prayer times.

Start with your airline's check-in cut-off

Every airline sets its own check-in and bag-drop deadline, and it can differ between flights and destinations. Find it on your booking confirmation or the airline's website or app, and check it again the day before you fly. If you miss it, the airline can refuse to check you in.

Many airlines also publish a recommended arrival time, earlier than the cut-off. Follow it, as it leaves room for queues at check-in and security.

Work backwards: a simple plan

Do not book the tightest possible time. If something runs late, it is easier to wait at the airport than to worry in traffic.

  • Check-in cut-off: from your airline. This is your deadline, not your target.
  • Arrival at the airport: the time your airline recommends, or a comfortable margin before the cut-off.
  • The drive: about 25 min for 18 km.
  • Traffic buffer: extra time if you leave near a prayer time or on a Friday.
  • Check-out and bags: time to settle the bill, bring luggage down and reach the hotel's vehicle entrance.
  • Pickup time: what is left. Book the taxi for that time.

Prayer times, Fridays and the central area

Central Madinah has controlled vehicle access around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, so the driver collects you at your hotel's assigned entrance and helps with your luggage. Hotels outside the central area have easy car access, so pickups there are quicker.

Roads near the mosque are busiest around each prayer, and above all around Friday prayer, when crowds arrive and leave at the same time. Book the pickup away from a prayer time if you can, and leave more margin on a Friday. Our guide to Friday prayer travel explains the pattern.

Your last day in Madinah: what else to fit in

Ask reception about the check-out time and whether they can store your bags if your flight is late in the day. Our guide to hotel check-in and check-out times helps you plan around them.

If you have a Rawdah appointment booked in the Nusuk app on your last day, leave plenty of time between it and your pickup. Do the same with a last visit to Jannat al-Baqi or Masjid Quba.

Rules for carrying Zamzam water differ by airline, so check yours before you pack. Our Zamzam travel guide covers the basics.

Night and early-morning flights

If your pickup falls between 00:00 and 05:00, a 20% night surcharge applies, and it is shown in your quote before you book. Our dispatch runs 24/7, and the driver's name and plate are sent the day before, so you know who is coming.

Pack the night before, leave your bags ready by the door and set two alarms. A calm start matters more than a few extra minutes of sleep.

Flying out of Jeddah instead?

If your flight home leaves from Jeddah, the drive is much longer: Madinah to Jeddah Airport is 402 km, about 5 h, with a rest stop on the way. It costs from SAR 690 per car. Leave a wide margin, as a delay on a long drive is harder to absorb. Our Madinah to Jeddah Airport guide covers that trip.

Questions readers ask

How early should I book the airport taxi?

A day or more ahead is best, and as soon as your flight is fixed in busy periods such as Ramadan and the weeks after Hajj. We confirm the driver's name and plate the day before.

Will the driver wait if I am late coming down?

City pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. If you are running late, message the driver so he knows.

Is there a train from central Madinah to the airport?

There is no train station at Madinah Airport. Madinah Haramain Station is about 15 km from the airport, so for a flight a taxi from your hotel is the direct option.

Can I stop at Masjid Quba on the way to the airport?

Yes. Ask when you book and we add the stop to the fixed quote. Allow about 45 minutes at Quba on top of your normal margin.

What if my flight time changes after I book?

Message us on WhatsApp with the new time and we move the pickup. Changes are free whenever possible, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
