Why fly home from Jeddah after Madinah?

Madinah to Jeddah Airport is a common last journey of an Umrah trip. Some pilgrims spend their first days in Makkah and their last in Madinah, but their flight home leaves from Jeddah, the main Umrah airport. Others simply find that the flight that suits them leaves from Jeddah.

Either way, this is a long road trip, not a quick airport run. Plan it like an intercity journey, with a rest stop and a time margin, rather than a hotel-to-terminal hop.

How long is the drive from Madinah to Jeddah Airport?

The drive is 402 km and takes about 5 h. Our drivers take Route 15 via Badr and Rabigh, a dual carriageway throughout, and the road passes King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) and the Rabigh industrial area before Jeddah. Night driving is quieter.

What time should you leave Madinah?

Start from your airline's check-in or bag-drop deadline, which is on your ticket or in the airline's app. Then work back:

  • Add the drive, about 5 h.
  • Add time for a rest stop, and for prayer stops if a prayer time falls on the road.
  • Add a margin for traffic in Jeddah and at the airport.
  • If you want a last prayer at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, book the pickup for after it and allow time to walk back to the hotel.

Taxi, train or connecting flight?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway links Madinah with King Abdulaziz Airport Station at Jeddah Terminal 1. Madinah station is about 10 km from the hotels near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, so you need a taxi to the station, and luggage limits apply per ticket. Another option is a domestic flight from Madinah Airport, about 18 km from the mosque, to connect in Jeddah; check with your airline how bags and connections work.

Train and airline fares and timetables change, so check the operator before you choose. Our comparison of flight and taxi between Jeddah and Madinah sets out the trade-offs.

Do you need Ihram on the way to Jeddah?

No, if you are flying home. Ihram is for people heading to Makkah for Umrah or Hajj, and a traveller going to Jeddah for a flight is not doing either. If you want one more Umrah before you fly, go to Makkah first: our post on the Madinah to Makkah taxi covers the Miqat stop, and you can then take the short drive from Makkah to the airport. Ask a scholar if you are unsure about your own case.

Checklist for the flight home

Yes. Take the Madinah to Jeddah taxi to a Jeddah hotel, then a short ride to the airport in the morning: 20 km, about 25 min, from SAR 60 per car.

Is it safe to drive at night?

The road is a dual carriageway throughout and quieter at night, and our drivers run it around the clock. Rides between 00:00 and 05:00 carry a 20% night surcharge, shown in the quote.

Can I book a female driver for this trip?

Yes. Female-driver vehicles are available in Madinah and Jeddah, from SAR 1,050 for this trip. Book at least 12 hours ahead.
