Umrah by road from Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar or the UAE

GCC Umrah by road means crossing into Saudi Arabia at the border nearest you, then driving on through the Eastern Province or Riyadh to Makkah or Madinah. Bahrain is the closest start, 52 km from Al Khobar over the King Fahd Causeway, while the onward drive from Riyadh to Makkah alone is 880 km, from SAR 1,500 per car.

Can you do Umrah by road from the Gulf?

Yes. GCC Umrah by road is possible from all four neighbouring countries, but the distances are long. From Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar, plan on at least one night on the road; from the UAE, longer still. With children, elderly parents or a lot of luggage, overnight stops are easier than one long push.

This post covers the border crossings our routes use, the onward drive to Makkah or Madinah, and what to check about documents. Border and visa rules are set by each country and can change, so treat this as a planning guide and confirm the rules with the official sources named below.

Border crossings and distances to the Saudi side

These are the cross-border routes on our site. Distances and times are for the road; allow 30 to 90 minutes at the border on top, longer at weekends and on public holidays. Our fares on these pages are for trips that start in Saudi Arabia.

The onward drive to Makkah or Madinah

Once you are in Saudi Arabia, the trip continues from the Eastern Province, Hafar Al Batin or Riyadh. On the roads to Makkah through Riyadh or Taif, you enter Ihram at Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail al-Kabir), and the driver stops there on request. If you go to Madinah first, you enter Ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah, on the way from Madinah to Makkah.

From Hafar Al Batin, Madinah (887 km) is much closer than Makkah (1164 km), so a Madinah-first plan can suit travellers from Kuwait.

Documents for people: check before you go

Every passenger needs the right documents to leave your country, enter Saudi Arabia and return home. As a rule, GCC citizens can travel between GCC countries with their national ID card. Residents of GCC countries who are not citizens need a Saudi visa; some may be able to apply online, but eligibility depends on your nationality and residence, so check the official Saudi visa platform before you plan.

Every pilgrim also needs an Umrah permit, booked through the Nusuk app, and your visa type decides whether you can perform Umrah. Confirm the current rules in Nusuk and with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. If you live in the Gulf, check that your own residence permit lets you return. Our guide to Umrah on a tourist visa, linked below, explains the visa side.

Driving your own car across the border

If you drive your own car, the car needs paperwork as well as the people, usually its registration, insurance that is valid in Saudi Arabia, and written permission from the owner if the car is not yours. Rental and company cars often have their own rules on cross-border trips. Check the current requirements with the border authorities and your insurer before you set off; we cannot confirm them for you.

Inside Saudi Arabia, remember that entry to Makkah is for Muslims only, parking near the Haram is difficult, and roads close around prayer times. Another option is to drive your own car to Al Khobar, Dammam or Riyadh and book a driver from there for the long leg to Makkah.

Suggested plans by country

  • Bahrain: cross the King Fahd Causeway to Al Khobar, drive to Riyadh (426 km from Al Khobar) and stay the night, then continue to Makkah. Our post on the King Fahd Causeway covers the crossing.
  • Kuwait: cross near Hafar Al Batin and head for Madinah first, or cross at Al Khafji and go via the Eastern Province and Riyadh. See also our post on Saudi Arabia to Kuwait by taxi.
  • Qatar: cross at Salwa – Abu Samra; the road to Riyadh passes near Al Ahsa (Hofuf). Stay in Riyadh, then drive on to Makkah.
  • UAE: this is the longest trip. Riyadh to Dubai alone is 1054 km, so plan for at least two long days on the road, or think about flying to Jeddah or Madinah instead.

Our posts on Umrah from Dammam by road and Umrah from Riyadh by road cover the Saudi legs in detail.

Questions readers ask

Do GCC citizens need a visa for Umrah in Saudi Arabia?

As a rule, GCC citizens do not need a visa to enter Saudi Arabia and travel on their national ID card, but they still need an Umrah permit in Nusuk. Confirm the current rules with the official sources before you travel.

How long does the border crossing take?

Allow 30 to 90 minutes at the border, longer at weekends and on public holidays. If you have a hotel check-in or an Umrah slot to meet, build in the full allowance.

Can we travel by road during the Hajj season?

Entry to Makkah is restricted for several weeks around Hajj, for people and vehicles. Unless you have the right permits, plan your road trip outside that period, and check the season's dates in Nusuk and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announcements.

Is it better to fly?

For the UAE and Qatar, flying is often simpler for a short trip. Our airport taxi from Jeddah to Makkah hotels costs from SAR 180 per car. Check airline fares and timetables with the airline.

Do we pay border fees on top of the fare?

Any border fees for the vehicle are confirmed with your quote, and the King Fahd Causeway toll is added at cost. Any visa fees for passengers are separate and are paid to the official authorities.
