Is there one Haram drop-off point for taxis?
No. It is natural to expect a single Haram drop-off point, like a taxi rank at an airport, but vehicle access around Masjid al-Haram depends on where you are going and when. Hotels near the Haram have their own vehicle entrances or drop-off zones, and the roads closest to the Haram close at peak prayer times.
When a road is closed, the driver uses the nearest open drop point and you walk the rest. Closures follow crowd levels and the authorities' instructions on the day, so nobody can promise a drop at a particular gate or at a fixed time. What a good driver can do is choose the nearest open point and help with your luggage.
Where does the taxi drop you in each hotel area?
Our Makkah hotel areas guide, linked below, gives example hotels in each area.
| Hotel area | Walk to the Haram | Where the taxi drops you |
|---|---|---|
| Abraj Al Bait (Clock Tower) | Directly opposite the southern plaza | The shared vehicle drop-off zone at the complex; the nearest open point at peak prayer times |
| Jabal Omar | A short walk west | The hotels' own vehicle access from the western side; quickest outside Friday and peak prayer times |
| West of the Haram | A short walk west | Through the Jabal Al Kaaba and Umm Al Qura road area; slower around prayer times |
| Ajyad and Al Safa side | A short walk south and east | The hotel when roads are open; central roads can close around prayer times |
| Ibrahim Al Khalil Road | Several minutes' walk south-west | The hotel entrance when the road is open to traffic |
| Kudai | About 2 km south, with hotel shuttles | At the door; traffic is lighter |
| Al Aziziyah and east Makkah | Several kilometres east, toward Mina | Outside the central area; use a shuttle or taxi to the Haram |
What changes around prayer times and on Fridays?
The busiest times for traffic near the Haram are just before the prayers, when people head to the mosque, and just after, when they leave. Fridays are busier still. If you can, book arrivals, check-outs and Haram runs away from these times; a ride that takes minutes at mid-morning can take much longer just before a prayer.
In Ramadan, crowds peak after Iftar and for Taraweeh, and in the last ten nights road closures spread across the central area from the evening. Our post on Ramadan transport in Makkah covers that season in detail.
Getting picked up after prayers
Pickups are harder than drop-offs, because large crowds leave at the same moment and the roads nearest the Haram may still be closed. Agree a pickup point a short walk from the Haram, away from the closed roads, rather than at the gate. Your hotel's own entrance is often the most reliable choice.
Share your live location with the driver on WhatsApp, and give the crowd a little time to thin out before you walk to the car. Our post on sharing your location with the driver explains how.
From Kudai, Aziziyah and other outer areas
Hotels outside the central area trade the short walk for easier car access. In Kudai, about 2 km south, traffic is lighter and the driver drops you at the door. Al Aziziyah, several kilometres east toward Mina, is also outside the central area. From both, most guests use hotel shuttle buses or a taxi to reach the Haram. Short rides start from SAR 60 per car, or SAR 120 in a family van.
Shuttles run on a timetable and fill up before prayers; a taxi leaves when you are ready, which helps with elderly family members.
Elderly pilgrims and wheelchair users
For elderly pilgrims, the walk from the drop point matters as much as the ride. Travel earlier than you think you need to, so you are not caught in closures just before a prayer, and plan rest stops on the walk.
A wheelchair-accessible van has a rear ramp and tie-downs, so the passenger rides seated in their own chair, with room for up to four companions. The driver takes you as close to an accessible gate as the open roads allow. Short rides in this van start from SAR 150.
Tips for a smooth drop-off
- Send the exact hotel name; some names are similar, such as Swissôtel Makkah and Swissôtel Al Maqam.
- Agree the drop point and the pickup point with the driver before you set off.
- Arriving from the airport? Drop your bags at the hotel before you go to the Haram.
- Avoid booking arrivals and check-outs just before a prayer, and leave extra time on Fridays.
- Keep the driver's number and your hotel's location pin on your phone.
- Night runs to the Haram for Tahajjud or Fajr run around the clock; a 20% surcharge applies between 00:00 and 05:00.
