Splitting a taxi: cost per person for groups of 2 to 11

Taxi cost per person is the per-car fare divided by the number of travellers: from Makkah to Madinah, 3 people share an economy sedan at about SAR 257 each, and 11 people share a family van at about SAR 131 each. For the lowest cost, use one sedan for up to 3, one Comfort MPV for 4 to 6 and one family van for 7 to 11.

How do you work out the taxi cost per person?

Our fares are per car, not per seat, so the taxi cost per person is the fare divided by the number of people in the car, rounded up to the next riyal. A car with one passenger costs the same as a full car, so the more seats you fill, the less each person pays.

Two things decide the best set-up: how many seats the vehicle has and how many suitcases it takes. Children count as passengers, because every child needs a seat.

Why does the price per person rise at 4 and 7?

Sedans take up to 3 passengers, so a fourth person means a bigger vehicle or a second car. A Comfort MPV is cheaper than two sedans: from Makkah to Madinah it costs SAR 1,130, against SAR 1,540 for two economy sedans. The same thing happens at 7, when the group outgrows the MPV and moves to a family van at SAR 1,440.

So the cost per person falls as each vehicle fills up, then rises a little at the step to the next size. A group of 6 pays less each than a group of 4 in the same MPV, and a group of 11 pays less each than a group of 7 in the same van.

Luggage can change the answer

The cheapest vehicle only works if the bags fit. Count suitcases as well as people, and remember Zamzam on the way home.

How does this compare with train or bus tickets?

Train and bus tickets are priced per person, so they suit people travelling alone. For a group, multiply the ticket price by the number of people, add a taxi at each end, and compare that with one per-car fare. Train and bus fares change, so check the operator's website for today's prices.

From Makkah to Madinah by train, for example, you need a taxi to Makkah's station in Rusayfah and another from Madinah station to your hotel. A city ride of up to 10 km costs SAR 60 in an economy sedan or SAR 90 in a Comfort MPV. See Makkah to Madinah: taxi vs Haramain train.

Tips for splitting the fare

  • Agree before the trip how you will split it: equally, or by family.
  • One person can pay the driver in cash or by card, and the others settle up later.
  • If you would rather not carry cash, pay ahead by bank transfer or the STC Bank app.
  • Rides between 00:00 and 05:00 add 20% to the car fare, so every share rises too.
  • A return booking costs about 5% less than two one-way fares, which lowers every share.
  • With six people and more than 5 suitcases, the MPV is too small. Compare the options in family van vs two sedans.

Questions readers ask

Do children pay less?

Fares are per car, so children do not change the price. Each child needs a seat, so count children as passengers, give their ages and ask for child seats when you book.

Can 4 people share a sedan to save money?

No. Our sedans take up to 3 passengers. For 4 people, a Comfort MPV from Jeddah to Makkah costs SAR 240, about SAR 60 each.

What about groups of 12 or more?

From 12 people, the cheapest choice is often two vehicles or a group bus with 22 to 50 seats. The route fare guides show the cost per person for groups of up to 45.

Is the cost per person the same at night?

No. The car fare rises by 20% between 00:00 and 05:00, so each share rises with it. For 11 people from Makkah to Madinah in a family van, that is about SAR 158 each instead of SAR 131.

Is an SUV a good choice for 7 people?

An SUV seats up to 7 with about 6 suitcases, but it costs more than a family van: SAR 1,580 against SAR 1,440 from Makkah to Madinah. Choose it for comfort, not to save money.
