Jeddah to Makkah taxi price: fixed fare vs meter vs app

A fixed-fare taxi from Jeddah to Makkah costs SAR 170 in an economy sedan from the city and SAR 180 from Jeddah Airport, per car, with fuel and tolls included. A meter taxi or an app can cost more or less on the day, because the price depends on the meter, traffic and demand, and you only see it when you travel.

What is the Jeddah to Makkah taxi price?

The Jeddah to Makkah taxi price depends on two things: where in Jeddah you start and which car you need. From the city the trip is 95 km on the Haramain Expressway (Route 40) and takes about 1 h 15 min. From the airport it is 102 km, about 1 h 25 min. Peak traffic on Thursday and Friday evenings adds 20 to 30 minutes.

Entry to Makkah is for Muslims only. Travellers who are not Muslim can use the same fixed fares for rides within Jeddah and to other cities.

Taking a meter taxi from Jeddah to Makkah

Street and airport taxis are priced by the meter, or by a price you agree with the driver. On a trip of around 100 km small differences add up, so before you set off agree that the meter will run, or agree a total price.

Make sure the driver will take you to your hotel's drop point. On busy days the central area around the Haram is pedestrian-only and taxis use designated drop points, so you may finish the trip on foot with your bags.

During Hajj season, the Al Shumaisi checkpoint on the Makkah road checks entry permits, and only permitted vehicles and passengers may continue. If you travel in that period, confirm the current rules with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah or the Nusuk app.

Using Uber, Careem or another app

Ride-hailing apps work in Jeddah and Makkah, and for a solo traveller with light bags they can be convenient. The app shows the price before you confirm, and it changes with demand, so the same trip can cost more at busy times.

Before you rely on an app, check three things: that you will have mobile data at the airport, that a vehicle large enough for your group and luggage is available, and that the driver can take you to your hotel's drop point. See pre-booked taxi vs ride-hailing apps for a fuller comparison.

What about the Haramain train or the bus?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway runs from Jeddah, including a station at the airport's Terminal 1, to Makkah's station in Rusayfah, about 6 km from the Haram. Tickets are priced per person, and you still need a taxi from Rusayfah to your hotel.

Buses are the cheapest option per person, but run station to station on a timetable. Train and bus fares and timetables change, so check the operator's website for today's prices. Our Jeddah to Makkah taxi vs Haramain train page compares the two door to door.

Which is cheapest for a family?

Because the fixed fare is per car, the bigger your group, the better it compares with per-person tickets. Here is the cost per person in one vehicle from Jeddah Airport to a Makkah hotel.

Tips for getting a fair price

  • Book before you fly, so the price is agreed in writing on WhatsApp.
  • Give the hotel name, not just "Makkah". Drop points differ by hotel and area.
  • If you need a stop to change or pray on the way, tell us when booking and we plan it.
  • Night pickups (00:00–05:00) add 20%; the quote shows it.
  • Ask for the return price at the same time. A return booking costs about 5% less than two one-way fares.
  • For a family of five or more with luggage, compare one van with two cars: see family van vs two sedans.

Questions readers ask

Does the price rise in Ramadan or Hajj season?

Our fixed fares do not rise in Ramadan or Hajj season. Cars sell out at those times, so book early, and in Hajj season the permit checks on the Makkah road apply.

Do you charge extra for luggage?

Bags that fit the vehicle are included. Child seats and extra-large items are small extras listed on the Jeddah to Makkah fare page. If you have a lot of luggage, choose a larger vehicle rather than paying for extras.

What if the driver cannot reach my hotel door?

On busy days the central area is closed to most traffic and taxis use designated drop points. The driver takes you to the nearest open point for your hotel and helps you unload.

How far ahead should I book?

Book as soon as you know your flight or travel date. In Ramadan and Hajj season book well ahead, because vehicles sell out.

Can I pay by card?

Yes. Pay by card or in cash (SAR) in the car, or by bank transfer or the STC Bank app (formerly STC Pay) before the ride.
