Why do pilgrims visit Badr?
A Badr Ziyarat takes you to the site of the Battle of Badr, the first major battle in Islam. It was fought in Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah (2 AH, 624 CE), when a small Muslim force from Madinah met a much larger army from Makkah. The Quran mentions the victory at Badr by name in Surah Al Imran.
The companions who were killed in the battle, the martyrs of Badr, are buried in the town. For many pilgrims the visit is a time to remember them and reflect on the early history of Islam. Like all Ziyarat, it is optional and is not part of Umrah or Hajj.
How far is Badr from Madinah?
Badr is 150 km by road from Madinah, on Route 15 and the Badr road, about 1 h 30 min each way. Our Badr battlefield page describes it as a half-day trip.
Morning is the best time to visit. Leave Madinah early and you are back before the hottest part of the day in the warmer months, with time to rest before the evening prayers at Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.
Ways to visit Badr by taxi
Fares are per car and fixed before the trip, with fuel and the driver included.
| Option | How it works | Economy sedan |
|---|---|---|
| Return trip from Madinah | The driver takes you to Badr, waits while you visit and brings you back | From SAR 520 |
| Stop on the way to Jeddah | Madinah to Jeddah via Badr, 420 km | SAR 720 |
| Stop on the way to Makkah | Madinah to Makkah, 450 km, with Badr as the rest stop | SAR 770 |
| One way to Badr | For travellers staying in Badr or going on by other transport | SAR 260 |
| Hourly driver | Extra stops and a flexible day | SAR 80 per hour, 3-hour minimum |
Adding Badr to a longer journey
If you are already leaving Madinah for Jeddah or Makkah, a stop at Badr saves a separate day. Tell us when you book how long you want there, so the driver plans the time and we include the stop in your fixed quote.
On the Jeddah to Madinah road, Badr is the natural second rest stop, so the same plan works in the other direction. Travellers heading north can see Khaybar on another day.
Going on to Makkah? Think about Ihram
If you travel from Madinah to Makkah to perform Umrah, you enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), about 12 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, before the long drive south. That means you visit Badr already in Ihram, so keep the rules of Ihram in mind at the site. The Miqat stop is included in the fare; allow 30 to 45 minutes for it.
If you would rather visit Badr without Ihram, make it a separate return trip from Madinah. Ask your scholar or group leader if you are unsure what applies to you, and see our guide to the Miqat stop by car.
What to expect at Badr
You visit the battlefield area and the graves of the martyrs of Badr in the town. Services in the area are limited, so carry water and snacks, and use the washrooms before you leave Madinah or at a stop on the way.
Dress as you would for any religious site and keep voices low at the graves. Access arrangements at cemeteries can change, so follow the signs and any instructions on site. The driver knows the way and can explain the sites in English, Urdu or Arabic; ask for your language when you book.
Which vehicle should you book?
For a long day with elderly parents, an SUV or Comfort MPV gives more room. A family van takes up to 11 people with luggage, which helps if you are moving on to Jeddah or Makkah after the visit.
| Vehicle | Seats | Madinah to Badr, one way |
|---|---|---|
| Economy Sedan | 1–3 | SAR 260 |
| Standard Sedan | 1–3 | SAR 300 |
| Comfort MPV | 4–6 | SAR 380 |
| Family Van | 7–11 | SAR 480 |
| SUV | 4–7 | SAR 530 |
