How long is the drive from Jeddah to Madinah?

Jeddah to Madinah by road is 420 km, about 4 h of driving. Our drivers take Route 15 via Rabigh and Badr, a dual carriageway throughout.

Add time for a rest stop and for a visit to Badr if you want one. Night driving is quieter, but rides at night (00:00–05:00) carry the 20% night surcharge.

From Jeddah Airport straight to Madinah the trip is 402 km, about 5 h, with meet-and-greet at arrivals.

The route north: Jeddah, Rabigh, Badr, Madinah

  • Jeddah to Rabigh: about 150 km north. The road passes King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) and the Rabigh industrial area.
  • Rabigh: the first natural rest stop.
  • Badr: the second rest stop, and the place to visit the battlefield and the graves of the martyrs of Badr.
  • Badr to Madinah: about 150 km, 1 h 30 min, on the Badr road and Route 15.
  • Madinah: drop at your hotel's assigned gate near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

Where to stop for rest and prayer

One stop is usually enough on a four-hour drive; ask for more if you travel with children or elderly parents. Our drivers stop at Rabigh or Badr, and rest, prayer and meal stops are included in the fare.

If a prayer time falls during the drive, tell the driver and you stop at a mosque on the way.

Visiting Badr on the way

Badr, south-west of Madinah, is the site of the Battle of Badr, the first major battle in Islam, fought in Ramadan in the second year after the Hijrah (2 AH). The graves of the martyrs of Badr lie in the town.

Because Badr is on the road, a visit adds only the time you spend there. Allow an hour or so for the battlefield area and the martyrs' graves, and tell us when booking so the driver plans it into the trip.

Carry water, as services in the area are limited, and dress as you would for any religious site. Read more about the Badr battlefield and the Martyrs of Badr.

Car, train or flight?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway links Jeddah and Madinah, with stations at Jeddah Airport Terminal 1, Al Sulaymaniyah in Jeddah and KAEC. Tickets are per person and you need taxis at both ends; Madinah's station is about 10 km from the hotels near Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

A flight is about an hour in the air, but check-in, security and airport transfers usually make the total time similar to driving. Train and airline fares and timetables change; check the operator's website.

The car suits families, travellers with Umrah luggage, and anyone who wants to stop at Badr. See Jeddah to Madinah: flight vs taxi.

Arriving in Madinah

The central area around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi has restricted vehicle access, so the driver drops you at your hotel's assigned gate and helps with your bags.

If you later go on from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah, the Miqat is Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), and the driver stops there for Ihram on request. Entry to Makkah is for Muslims only.
