How far is Riyadh to Dammam by road?

Riyadh to Dammam by road is 400 km, almost all of it on Highway 40, the Riyadh–Dammam highway. Allow about 4 h of driving, plus time for a rest stop and for city traffic at each end.

The highway is a long desert road with heavy truck traffic, and services are spread out on parts of it. Our drivers are experienced on this highway; they fuel up before leaving and carry water.

The route, step by step

If your destination is a company site, check the gate rules before you travel. A gate pass is needed to drive inside the Aramco camp in Dhahran, so without one we drop you at the main gate. Plants in Jubail Industrial City also need gate passes for entry, so have your site contact's details ready.

  • Pickup at your Riyadh hotel, home or office, then east out of the city to join Highway 40.
  • Open desert for most of the way, where services are spread out.
  • A rest and prayer stop at the Al Hofuf junction or at Judah, the stops our drivers use on this route.
  • Into Dammam and on to your address.
  • Going on to Al Khobar or Dhahran: Dammam to Al Khobar is a further 25 km, about 25 min.

Rest stops and prayer on the way

One stop is usually enough on a four-hour drive, and you can ask for more. Rest, prayer and meal stops are included in our fare at no extra charge.

Highway service areas vary, so tell us if you need something in particular, such as a family washroom or a proper meal, and the driver plans around it. If you travel with children or elderly parents, mention it when you book and the driver will build in extra breaks.

When is the best time to leave?

Leave outside Riyadh's morning and evening rush hours, so you are not stuck in city traffic before you reach the highway. In summer, an early start avoids driving through the hottest part of the day.

Our dispatch runs 24/7, so night trips are possible. Rides at night (00:00–05:00) carry the 20% night surcharge: SAR 820 in an economy sedan instead of SAR 680.

Heavy trucks use the highway at all hours. Our drivers on this route are used to them and keep a steady pace.

Road, train or flight?

The SAR East Line runs from Riyadh to Dammam and also serves Hofuf and Abqaiq. It is comfortable and priced per person, but you need a ride to Riyadh's station and another from Dammam Station; our drivers can meet you at Dammam Station.

Flights between Riyadh and Dammam are short, but add the time to reach the airport, check in and travel from King Fahd Airport, which is 40 km from Dammam. Train and airline fares and timetables change; check the operator's website.

For three or more people, or a drop at a compound, plant or hotel door, the car is usually simpler. See Riyadh to Dammam: taxi vs train.

Questions readers ask

Can I stop in Al Ahsa on the way?

Yes, but Al Ahsa (Hofuf) is off the direct highway, so it adds distance. Riyadh to Al Ahsa is 326 km and Al Ahsa to Dammam 150 km; ask for a quote with the stop.

Can we travel with a pet?

Yes. Our pet-friendly cars take cats and dogs in carriers, with seat covers, and are used by expats moving between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam.

We are moving house. Can a van carry our luggage?

Yes. A cargo van takes 20 or more suitcases, the driver helps load, and it can make the intercity trip the same day.

Is a return trip cheaper?

Yes. A return booking costs about 5% less than two one-way fares, and we keep the same driver for both legs where possible.

Can you take us on to Bahrain?

Yes, with valid entry documents for Bahrain. The trip crosses at the King Fahd Causeway, where passport and customs checks are on the causeway island; the toll is added at cost.
