Riyadh in one day with a driver: a sample itinerary

A Riyadh one-day itinerary with a driver can cover Masmak Fortress and the old souqs in the morning, the National Museum and Murabba Palace at midday, and At-Turaif in Diriyah with dinner at Bujairi Terrace in the evening. The day takes about 10 hours including the drives, and one car with a driver for that time costs SAR 800 in an economy sedan or SAR 1,500 in a family van for up to 11.

Is one day enough to see Riyadh?

One day is enough for the essentials if you keep one car and driver from morning to night. This Riyadh one day itinerary links the old centre, the national museum and Diriyah. Masmak Fortress and the National Museum are each about 5 km from the city centre, while At-Turaif in Diriyah is about 20 km out, so a driver saves you waiting for a new ride at every stop.

You will not see everything. The Edge of the World and Ushaiqer heritage village each take a full day on their own, and Boulevard City and the Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge suit an evening; see Riyadh at night by car.

The day at a glance

Times on site are typical visits. With three longer drives of about 25 minutes, the time from central Riyadh to Diriyah, the day comes to about 10 hours. Add lunch where it suits you, and tell the driver if you want to change the order.

Morning: Masmak Fortress and the old souqs

Masmak Fortress is the mud-brick fortress in old Riyadh linked to the founding of the modern Saudi state, and it is now a museum. Allow about 1 h, then walk on to the nearby souqs of Al Dirah.

Parking near the fort is limited, so the driver drops you at the gate and waits nearby; call when you are ready. Opening hours change on Fridays, so on a Friday check the times first and be ready to swap the order of the day.

Midday: the National Museum and Murabba Palace

The National Museum of Saudi Arabia is the main national museum, in the King Abdulaziz Historical Centre. It covers Arabia from prehistory to today, so allow two to three hours. It is a good choice for families and keeps you indoors in the midday heat.

Murabba Palace, King Abdulaziz's former palace built in traditional Najdi style, is in the same park. A visit takes about 45 min, an easy add-on before you head out to Diriyah.

Late afternoon and evening: Diriyah

Diriyah is 20 km from central Riyadh, about 25 min by car. At-Turaif is the UNESCO-listed mud-brick district of Diriyah and the first capital of the Saudi state. Visits may need timed tickets, so check the official Diriyah website and book the car around your slot.

Finish with dinner at Bujairi Terrace, which overlooks At-Turaif. Weekend evenings are the busiest, and evening traffic back to Riyadh is heavy, which is one more reason to keep the driver. Our Diriyah and Bujairi Terrace guide has more on tickets and timing.

What does a day with a driver cost?

You pay by the hour, with a 3-hour minimum and a fixed quote before the day. Fuel within the city and the waiting at every stop are included.

Separate rides can cost less if you only make two or three moves: a ride inside the city starts from SAR 60, and Riyadh to Diriyah from SAR 60. The trade-off is waiting for a new car at each stop and at the end of the night. The Riyadh Metro guide covers the public transport option.

How can you change the plan?

  • On a Friday: check Masmak's opening hours first, because they change on Fridays.
  • Early risers: start with a walk in Wadi Hanifah, the long valley on Riyadh's western side with paths, lakes and picnic areas. It has several entry points, so tell us where to start.
  • In summer: keep the museum for the hottest hours and move outdoor walking to the evening.
  • In Riyadh Season, usually October to March: evening traffic is heavier, so allow extra time for the drive to Diriyah.
  • Arriving the same day: Riyadh Airport is 35 km from the centre, about 40 min. The driver can meet your flight and start the day from there.
  • More days: plan the Ushaiqer heritage village day trip or the Edge of the World as separate days.

Questions readers ask

Can I do this itinerary on a layover in Riyadh?

Only if your visa lets you leave the airport, so check the official visa rules for your passport first. Riyadh Airport is 35 km from the centre, and you need to be back in good time for check-in, so a shorter version of the day is safer.

Does the driver act as a guide?

The driver handles the roads, drop-off points and waiting, and most of our drivers speak English or Urdu as well as Arabic. For a guided tour inside At-Turaif or the museum, check what each venue offers.

Are entry tickets included?

No. The fare covers the car, driver and fuel. Buy tickets from each venue and check opening hours before the day.

Can we start from KAFD or the Diplomatic Quarter?

Yes. We pick up anywhere in Riyadh, including Olaya, King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), the Diplomatic Quarter and Riyadh Front, and drop you back at the end of the day.

How far ahead should I book?

Book at least a day ahead, and earlier in Riyadh Season. The driver's name and plate arrive the day before, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup.
