Why pilgrims visit Masjid Quba
A Masjid Quba taxi is one of the most common short rides in Madinah. Masjid Quba is the first mosque built in Islam, founded when the Prophet ﷺ reached Quba on the Hijrah, before he entered Madinah.
According to the hadith, praying two rak'ahs in Masjid Quba after making wudu at home carries the reward of an Umrah. The Prophet ﷺ used to visit Quba every Saturday, riding or walking, which is why Saturday morning is the Sunnah time to go.
How far is Masjid Quba from your hotel?
Masjid Quba is about 4 km by road from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, south of the central area. The drive is short, but the time it takes depends on traffic around the Prophet's Mosque, which is heaviest around prayer times.
Central Madinah has controlled vehicle access around the mosque, so the driver collects you at your hotel's assigned entrance. Hotels outside the central area have easy car access and pickup at the door. Our Madinah hotel areas guide explains the difference.
Ways to get to Masjid Quba
Taxi fares are per car, not per person, and fixed before the ride.
| Option | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Walk the Quba walkway | Free | A walkway links Quba to the Prophet's Mosque. Pleasant in the cool hours, hard in the midday heat. |
| One-way taxi | From SAR 60 per car | Quick, but you need a ride back. |
| Return trip, driver waits | From SAR 240 per car | The same price as our 3-hour hourly minimum, so you can add a stop or two. |
| Ziyarat morning | SAR 80 per hour, 3-hour minimum | Mount Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatayn, the Seven Mosques and Quba in about 3 to 4 hours. |
| Ride-hailing app | Shown in the app | Works for short city rides; prices change with demand. |
Make wudu at your hotel first
The reward in the hadith is for someone who purifies himself at home and then comes to pray at Quba, so make wudu at your hotel before you leave.
Tell the driver if you need a few minutes. City pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting, so you do not need to rush out of the room.
Saturday morning at Quba: what to expect
Saturday morning is the Sunnah time to visit and also the busiest, with more traffic near the mosque and more people inside. If you go on a Saturday, leave early, agree a pickup point with the driver before you go in, and keep your phone on so he can reach you.
If you want a quieter visit, any other morning works. Allow about 45 minutes at the mosque, enough to pray without rushing, and more on a Saturday.
Add Masjid al-Jumu'ah on the way back
Masjid al-Jumu'ah, about 3 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, lies between Quba and the Prophet's Mosque. It marks where the Prophet ﷺ led the first Friday prayer, and a stop takes about 20 minutes. It is quieter outside Friday.
For a full morning, combine Quba with Mount Uhud, Masjid al-Qiblatayn and the Seven Mosques. Our one-morning Madinah Ziyarat route sets out the order and timings.
Walking to Quba: when it works
The walkway between the Prophet's Mosque and Quba is a good choice in the cool of the early morning or evening for people who walk well. From about May to September, Madinah afternoons are typically above 40 °C, so walking at midday is hard, especially for children and elderly parents.
You can also mix the two: walk one way in the cool and take a taxi the other.
