Makkah to Jeddah Airport: when to leave and what it costs

A Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi covers 102 km in about 1 h 25 min and costs from SAR 180 per car, or SAR 330 in a family van for up to 11. To set the pickup time, start from your airline's check-in deadline, add the drive and a margin for traffic, and avoid leaving central Makkah just before a prayer.

How long does the drive from Makkah to Jeddah Airport take?

A Makkah to Jeddah Airport taxi runs on the Haramain Expressway (Route 40). From a Makkah hotel to King Abdulaziz International Airport is 102 km, about 1 h 25 min in normal traffic.

Two things can add time. Thursday and Friday evenings are the busiest on this road and can add 20 to 30 minutes. And in central Makkah the roads closest to the Haram close at peak prayer times, so a pickup booked just before a prayer can take longer to get moving.

When should you leave for the airport?

Airlines set their own check-in and bag-drop deadlines, and they differ between airlines and routes. Work back from your airline's deadline, not from the departure time.

  • Find the check-in or bag-drop deadline for your flight on the ticket or in the airline's app.
  • Add the drive: about 1 h 25 min from a Makkah hotel.
  • Add a margin for traffic, and more on Thursday and Friday evenings.
  • If your hotel is in the central area, book the pickup away from a prayer time, or allow extra time to get out.
  • Add time at the airport for checking in large bags and Zamzam.
  • Book the taxi for that time and send us your flight number.

Which terminal will you fly from?

Terminal 1 at King Abdulaziz International Airport handles most scheduled international and domestic flights. The Hajj Terminal handles pilgrim charter flights. Your ticket or airline app shows which one you use, and terminal use can change, so check it again the day before.

Send us your airline and flight number when you book and the driver takes you to the right terminal. Our Jeddah Airport guide covers both terminals.

Fares are per car and fixed before the ride, including fuel, tolls and the driver. A 20% night surcharge applies between 00:00 and 05:00 and is shown in your quote, which matters if you have an early-morning flight.

Your last day in Makkah: Tawaf, check-out and luggage

Many pilgrims make a farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada) before leaving Makkah. Scholars differ on whether it is required after Umrah, so ask a scholar you trust. Either way, the Haram can be crowded, so leave a generous gap between your Tawaf and the pickup.

Hotel check-out times vary, so ask reception whether they can store your bags if your pickup is later in the day. Agree the pickup point with the driver the night before. In areas such as Ajyad, central roads can close around prayer times, so check-out pickups need extra time.

If you are taking Zamzam water home, check your airline's rules before you pack. Our departure day guide walks through the whole last day.

Taxi, train or bus to Jeddah Airport?

The Haramain High-Speed Railway runs from Makkah station in Al Rusayfah to King Abdulaziz Airport Station at Terminal 1. The station is about 6 km from the Haram, so you need a taxi or bus to reach it, and luggage limits apply per ticket. Buses cost less per person but run to a timetable. Fares and timetables change, so check the operator before you travel.

For a family with suitcases and Zamzam, a taxi is usually simpler: it goes from your hotel to the terminal with all the bags in one vehicle. If you do take the train, you can book a taxi to Makkah Haramain station for the first few kilometres.

Questions readers ask

Our flight leaves at 3 am. Is there a night fare?

Rides between 00:00 and 05:00 carry a 20% night surcharge, shown in the quote before you book. If your pickup is just before midnight, ask us how the surcharge applies to your time.

Can we stop on the way to the airport?

Yes. Tell us when you book if you want a stop for a meal, shopping or prayer, and build that time into your pickup.

Can we spend a few hours in Jeddah before the flight?

Yes. Ask us to quote the day with an hourly driver, who waits at each stop and takes you on to the airport. Hourly rates start from SAR 80 per hour with a 3-hour minimum. Our post on visiting Al-Balad has ideas for the old town.

Our flight was rescheduled. Can we change the pickup?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp with the new time. Changes to time or vehicle are free whenever possible.

We are staying in Kudai. Is the pickup easier?

Usually, yes. Kudai is outside the central area, so traffic is lighter and the driver collects you at the door rather than at the nearest open point.
