Dammam day trips at a glance

Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran form one metro area, and the best Dammam day trips start from any of the three. Fares within the metro area are flat, and every trip below is a fixed fare per car, including fuel and the driver.

Al Ahsa Oasis: the classic full day

Al Ahsa Oasis is one of the largest oases in the world and a UNESCO site, with palm groves, springs and villages. Al Qarah Mountain has cool limestone caves and passages, pleasant even in summer; wear shoes with grip. In Hofuf, Ibrahim Palace is a historic fortress-palace with a mosque, close to the Qaisariya Souq.

The oasis is best as a tour with an hourly driver who waits at each stop: SAR 640 for 8 hours in an economy sedan, or SAR 1,440 in an SUV. You can also take the SAR East Line train to Hofuf station and book a driver there; check train times and fares with the operator.

Bahrain over the King Fahd Causeway

The drive from Dammam to Manama is 75 km, about 1 h before border time; from Al Khobar it is 52 km. Passport and customs checks are on the causeway island halfway across. Allow 30 to 90 minutes at the border, longer at weekends and on public holidays.

Every passenger needs valid entry documents for Bahrain, and the rules depend on your nationality and residence, so check them before you book. The causeway toll is added to your fare at cost, and we confirm the vehicle, documents and any border fees with your quote. Our post on the Dammam to Bahrain causeway has the details.

Qatif and Tarout Island: a half day

Qatif is the heritage coastal town 15 km north of Dammam. On Tarout Island, Tarout Castle stands in one of the oldest inhabited places in the Gulf; the visit is short, so combine it with the Qatif Heritage Market. Tarout Island is included in Qatif fares, from SAR 60 per car.

Jubail: the coast and the industrial city

Jubail is 85 km north on the Abu Hadriyah Highway, about 1 h, or 100 km from Al Khobar. Fanateer Beach is one of Jubail's landmarks. Jubail Industrial City plants need gate passes for drop-offs inside, which does not affect a visit to the beach or the town.

Closer to home: Half Moon Bay, Ithra and the corniches

  • Half Moon Bay: a wide, shallow bay south of Al Khobar with beaches and resorts. Choose your beach or resort when booking; weekends are busy.
  • Ithra in Dhahran: a cultural centre with museums, a library, a cinema and exhibitions. Some exhibitions need tickets; allow at least half a day.
  • Al Khobar Corniche and Water Tower: a seafront promenade, best in the cooler evening, with dinner on Prince Turki Street.
  • King Fahd Park in Dammam: a large public park with lawns and family areas; choose the gate nearest your picnic spot.
  • City rides between these places start from SAR 60 per car.

Hourly driver or fixed fare?

An hourly booking has a 3-hour minimum, from SAR 80 per hour, and a female driver is available in Dammam, from SAR 130 per hour; book 12 hours ahead.

  • Date harvest in Al Ahsa is in late summer.
  • Weekends are busiest at the causeway, the beaches and Half Moon Bay.
