Uber vs Careem in Makkah: how the apps work
If you are weighing up Uber vs Careem in Makkah, the good news is that both apps operate in Saudi Arabia, including Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah. You request a ride in the app, see the price before you confirm, and pay with the options the app offers. For a quick ride from your hotel to a shopping centre or a Ziyarat site, that works well.
For most pilgrims the two apps are similar. The bigger choice is between booking on the spot and booking ahead, and each has its place.
When is an app a good fit?
- Short rides inside the city, such as your hotel to a restaurant or a mall.
- You travel alone or as a couple with light bags.
- Your timing is flexible and you can wait a few minutes for a car.
- You have a local SIM or roaming data on your phone.
When is pre-booking a better fit?
- A fixed price agreed in advance, per car, that does not change at busy times.
- Meet-and-greet at arrivals with a name board, and flight tracking with 60 minutes of free waiting after landing.
- Large vehicles: family vans for up to 11 people and buses with up to 50 seats.
- Intercity trips such as Makkah to Madinah, with rest and prayer stops included.
- A stop at the Miqat to enter Ihram on the way to Makkah.
- The driver's name and plate the day before, and an English, Urdu or Arabic speaking driver on request.

Arriving at Jeddah Airport
The airport is where the difference shows most. With an app, you clear immigration, collect your bags, connect to data and then request a car. With a pre-booked taxi, the driver is already waiting at the arrivals exit of your terminal, holding a name board.
From Jeddah Airport to a Makkah hotel is 102 km and about 1 h 25 min, from SAR 180 in an economy sedan or SAR 330 in a family van. Our guide to Jeddah Airport to Makkah walks through the arrival step by step.
Makkah to Madinah and the Miqat
Makkah to Madinah is 450 km and takes about 4 h 30 min, from SAR 770 per car or SAR 1,440 for a family van. The driver plans a rest stop on the way and takes you from hotel to hotel.
On the way back from Madinah to Makkah, the driver stops at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali) so you can enter Ihram, if you ask when you book. Read more in our post on the Miqat stop by car.
Ramadan, Fridays and the Hajj season
At peak times, every option gets busier. In Ramadan, crowds peak after Iftar and for Taraweeh, and roads around the Haram close before prayers, so drivers use the nearest open drop point. Fridays and prayer times also slow traffic near the Haram. App prices can rise with demand at these times; a pre-booked fare stays as agreed.
In the Hajj season, only vehicles with Hajj permits may enter Makkah and the holy sites, whichever company runs them. Plan Hajj transport with your Hajj organiser or a licensed operator.
A practical mix for most trips
A sensible plan for many families is to use both: a pre-booked car for the airport, Makkah to Madinah and the return flight, and an app for short hops in the city. If you want one booking for the main legs, our Umrah transport package covers the airport, Makkah, Madinah and the return with one price.
