Travelling at night on Saudi highways: what to expect

Night travel on a Saudi highway is cooler and often quieter, but camels and other animals can stray onto rural roads, some long stretches have few services, and every driver needs rest. Our drivers take rest stops on long trips, and a 20% night surcharge applies to pickups between 00:00 and 05:00, so Makkah to Madinah costs from SAR 770 by day or about SAR 920 in that window.

Is it a good idea to travel at night on Saudi highways?

Night travel on a Saudi highway is common. Many flights land late, summer days are hot, and some routes, such as Jeddah to Madinah, are quieter after dark. For passengers in a car with a driver, a night journey can be a sensible choice, as long as you plan for the things that change when the sun goes down.

This guide explains what to expect, what we do on night trips and what the night surcharge adds. If you plan to drive yourself, read the self-drive section and check official sources for the current traffic rules.

Camels and other animals on rural roads

Camels can wander onto rural roads, especially at night. They are large, they move slowly and unpredictably, and a dark-coated animal is hard to see beyond the headlights. Sheep, goats and other animals can also cross near farms and villages.

Our drivers keep speeds sensible after dark, watch the verges and take extra care on rural stretches, where animals can appear without warning. If you see animals near the road, tell the driver; another pair of eyes helps.

Long stretches with few services

Some routes run for long distances with few towns. By day this is a matter of planning; at night, closed or distant services matter more. These are examples from our routes:

RouteDistanceTypical driveNote
Madinah to AlUla350 km3 h 30 minFuel at Khaybar; limited services after that
Ha'il to Sakaka389 km4 h 35 minServices spread out; the driver fuels up first and carries water
Riyadh to Wadi Al Dawasir620 km6 hLimited services between Al Kharj and Al Sulayyil
Najran to Sharurah330 km3 h 30 minEmpty Quarter road; drivers carry extra water
Umluj to AlUla313 km5 h 5 minServices spread out on the way

Driver rest and tiredness

Every driver needs rest, and tiredness is a particular risk late at night. Our drivers take rest stops on long routes, and rest, prayer and meal stops are included in the fare. On the longest drives, such as Riyadh to Makkah, families can split the journey with an overnight stop, for example in Taif.

Passengers get tired too. After a long night flight, a short rest at an airport hotel before a long road journey can make the drive easier for everyone; tell us and we move the pickup time. Our post on arriving late at night covers this choice for Jeddah arrivals.

What does night travel cost?

The surcharge applies to pickups between 00:00 and 05:00 and is built into the fixed fare we quote, so there is nothing extra to pay in the car. Night prices below are rounded to the nearest SAR 10.

Checklist for a night journey

  • Share your live location with family for the whole trip.
  • Keep your passport or Iqama within reach; checkpoints can be active at any hour.
  • Carry water and a snack, and a warm layer for strong air-conditioning or cold desert nights in winter.
  • Charge your phone and bring a power bank.
  • Wear your seat belt in the back as well as the front.
  • Tell the hotel your late arrival time, so the room is held.
  • Tell us if anyone needs regular stops, and the driver plans them.

If you drive yourself at night

  • Start rested, and stop for a break whenever you feel tired; do not push on to save time.
  • Keep to the posted limits; Saher cameras record violations automatically.
  • Watch for animals near the road on rural stretches, and slow down if you see any.
  • Refuel before long empty stretches, and carry water.
  • Keep your phone out of your hand while driving.
  • Check the road travel rules guide and official sources before you set off.

Questions readers ask

Does the night surcharge change on the day?

No. If your pickup is between 00:00 and 05:00, the 20% surcharge is already included in the fixed fare we quote, so the price you agree is the price you pay.

Is Jeddah to Madinah a good road for night travel?

It is a dual carriageway throughout and quieter at night, with a rest stop at Rabigh or Badr. The drive is 420 km, about 4 h.

Can I sleep in the car on a night trip?

Yes. Keep your seat belt on, and tell the driver if you want to be woken for a stop or a prayer.

Do you run rides all night?

Yes. Dispatch runs 24/7, including late airport pickups and night rides to the Haram, with the night surcharge shown upfront.

Is it safer to travel by day?

Daylight makes animals and road hazards easier to see and services easier to find. If your timing is flexible, especially on remote routes, choose a daytime drive.
