The five Miqat points and which one your route passes

The five Miqat locations are Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), Al-Juhfah near Rabigh, Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail al-Kabir), Yalamlam and Dhat Irq, and anyone heading to Makkah for Umrah must be in Ihram before passing the one on their route. By road from Madinah you pass Dhul Hulayfah about 12 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, at the start of the 450 km drive.

What are the Miqat locations?

The Miqat locations are the boundary points, set by the Prophet ﷺ, where pilgrims heading to Makkah for Umrah or Hajj must be in Ihram. There are five, each set for people coming from a particular direction. Today the Miqat points on main roads have mosques where pilgrims can wash, change and pray.

People who live inside these boundaries, such as residents of Jeddah, enter Ihram from where they are. People already in Makkah who want to perform Umrah go out to a point outside the sacred area, usually Masjid Aisha at Al-Tan'eem. If you have a question about your own case, ask a scholar you trust; this guide covers the practical side of getting there.

Which Miqat does your road route pass?

The main road from Madinah to Makkah passes Dhul Hulayfah near the start of the journey. Your driver stops there for Ihram at no extra charge; allow 30 to 45 minutes. The Madinah to Makkah taxi takes about 4 h 30 min in total and costs from SAR 770 per car.

From Riyadh, the road to Makkah passes Qarn al-Manazil at As-Sail al-Kabir. From Taif, the Al Hada road passes Wadi Muhrim and the flatter road via As-Sail passes As-Sail al-Kabir; both are treated as Qarn al-Manazil. A Taif to Makkah taxi covers 90 km in about 1 h 30 min.

From the north along the coast, through Yanbu and Rabigh, you pass the Al-Juhfah area near Rabigh. From the south along the coast you pass Yalamlam. From Abha or Al Bahah, the Miqat depends on which road your driver takes, the coast road or the mountain road through Taif, so tell us when you book and we plan the stop. The Jeddah to Makkah road passes no Miqat, because Jeddah is already inside the boundaries.

Flying in: Ihram on the plane or in Madinah?

If you fly to Jeddah for Umrah, your flight crosses a Miqat before landing. Most scholars advise entering Ihram before that point, so many pilgrims change before boarding or on board, and many airlines announce when the plane is near the Miqat. Ask your scholar if you are unsure about your own case.

If you fly to Madinah first, you do not need Ihram on the flight. You spend your days in Madinah, then enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah when you travel on to Makkah by road. This is one reason many families fly into Madinah and out of Jeddah.

Already in Makkah? Masjid Aisha and Al-Ji'ranah

Masjid Aisha at Al-Tan'eem and Masjid al-Ji'ranah are not among the five Miqat points, but they are where people already in Makkah go to enter Ihram for another Umrah. Masjid Aisha is about 7 km from the Haram and has washrooms and changing areas. Al-Ji'ranah is about 25 km away, north-east of Makkah, and usually less crowded.

A taxi to Masjid Aisha costs from SAR 60 per car each way, and the driver waits while you change and pray. Many pilgrims book the return straight back to the Haram.

How does a Miqat stop work in a taxi?

  • Tell us when you book that you need a Miqat stop. We add it to the plan at no extra charge.
  • Wash and put on your Ihram clothes at the hotel if you prefer, and make your intention at the Miqat.
  • Allow 30 to 45 minutes at Dhul Hulayfah for washing, changing and prayer.
  • Keep your Ihram bag in the car with you, not under the suitcases in the boot.
  • The driver waits in the car park while you use the washrooms and changing areas.
  • After the stop, the drive continues to your Makkah hotel, with a rest stop on the way.

Checklist before you reach the Miqat

  • Your Umrah permit booked on Nusuk for a time that fits the drive.
  • Ihram clothes, and unscented soap and toiletries.
  • Your passport or Iqama for checkpoints on the way.
  • Water and a light snack for the road.
  • Your hotel's name and location pin for the driver.

Questions readers ask

Is Jeddah a Miqat?

Jeddah lies inside the Miqat boundaries, so people who live in Jeddah enter Ihram from there. Travellers flying in from abroad for Umrah are usually advised to enter Ihram before the plane reaches the Miqat; ask a scholar about your own case.

Does the Haramain train stop at a Miqat?

No. The train makes no Miqat stop, so plan your Ihram before you travel and ask a scholar if you are unsure. A taxi from Madinah can stop at Dhul Hulayfah on the way.

Is there an extra charge for the Miqat stop?

No. Rest, prayer and Miqat stops are included in our fixed fares on long routes.

Can I go to Masjid Aisha at night?

Yes. We run Makkah rides around the clock, and the mosque is quieter at night. A 20% night surcharge applies between 00:00 and 05:00 and is shown in the quote.

I am driving from Riyadh to Madinah first. Which Miqat do I use?

If you go to Madinah first, you do not need Ihram for that leg. You enter Ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah, when you travel from Madinah to Makkah.
